Poultry Diseases A to Z

Like all living creatures there is a long list of diseases, pests and parasites that your poultry can suffer from, here is a list with some information.

Aspergillosis  Aspergillosis is a fungal infectious disease, caused by Aspergillus fumigatus, in which the typical sign is gasping for breath, especially in young chicks.

Avian Encephalomyelitis (AE)  Avian encephalomyelitis (AE) is primarily a viral infection of  young poultry in particular chickens, turkey and pheasants

Bumblefoot   If your chicken is limping it is possible that it has developed bumblefoot, also known as ‘plantar pododermatitis’.

Coccidiosis  Coccidiosis is a parasitic disease of the intestinal tract caused by the coccidian protozoa, a single cell organism.

Egg Drop Syndrome  Egg drop syndrome (EDS) is caused by a  hemagglutinating  adenovirus infection in laying  hens.

Infectious Bronchitis (IB)  Infectious Bronchitis (IB) is an acute highly contagious viral respiratory disease of chickens.

Impacted Crop Typically a birds crop will become impacted (crop bound) by something it has ingested.

.Poultry Lice  Lice are extremely irritating to your chickens and they will if left, cause them to injure themselves through excessive scratching and preening.

Marek’s Disease  Marek’s Disease from a herpes virus in chickens and turkeys leads to paralysis.

Mycoplasma gallisepticum (M.g)  Mycoplasma gallisepticum or M.g, is an infection which can affect chickens, turkeys, game birds, pigeons and other wild birds.

Newcastle Disease Newcastle disease is a respiratory disease caused by a virus and was first discovered in Newcastle upon Tyne, England

 

Northern Fowl Mite  are aggressive mites that feed on the birds themselves.

 

Pendulous Crop  A pendulous crop is when the crop hangs down lower than it should do and often swings ‘like a pendulum’ as the bird moves around.

Red Mite  The red mite or chicken/poultry mite  (Dermanyssus gallinae) is a common external parasite of poultry and wild birds and although very small it can be seen by the naked eye.

Scaly Leg Mite  Scaly leg is caused by an eight leg mite (Knemidocoptes mutans) that burrows under the scales of your chicken’s legs and spends its entire life cycle of 1 to 2 weeks on the bird.

Sour Crop Sour crop is caused when the crop doesn’t empty fully overnight and as a result the food ferments within the crop causing a fungal infection.

Worms in Poultry  If you keep chickens you will need to become familiar with worms and worming.

.Yolk Sac Infection or Mushy Chick Disease Yolk Sac Infection or Mushy Chick Disease  (also known as Omphallitis ) is a condition seen worldwide in poultry and occurs as a result of bacterial infection of the navel and yolk sac of newly hatched chicks.
